New bosses for Iberia and Vueling

International Airlines Group (IAG) members Iberia and Vueing have appointed new chief executives with the impending retirement of group CEO Willie Walsh and his replacement by Iberia chairman and chief executive Luis Gallego (BTN 13 January).

Vueling chairman and chief executive Javier Sánchez-Prieto will take over the Iberia position, while Marco Sansavini, currently Iberia chief commercial officer, has been appointed chairman and chief executive of Vueling.

Walsh congratulated both men, who will take up their new roles in late March, saying he was “absolutely confident that they are the right people to lead Iberia and Vueling” after having worked in IAG for several years.

He added: “They have fantastic track records, proving once again that we have extremely talented people internally that we are able to promote to our top jobs.”

Gallego said the two had considerable knowledge and experience of the Spanish and international markets, adding: “I’m delighted they will be part of my team and I’m confident they will continue to develop their airlines’ successful strategies.”

Sánchez-Prieto said it was an honour to lead Iberia which had undertaken “an outstanding transformation”, while Sansavini said he looked forward to continuing to develop Vueling’s successful business model in the future.
