InterContinental relaunches in Scotland

Continuing its integration of Principal Hotels into its own portfolio, InterContinental Hotels (IHG) has brought an historic Edinburgh property back into its system to relaunch the InterContinental brand in Scotland.

InterContinental Edinburgh – The George is the third luxury hotel IHG has opened in Scotland, after successfully launching the Kimpton brand in Edinburgh and Glasgow earlier this year.

The developments follow the group’s agreement last year with Covivio (formerly Foncière des Régions), to rebrand and operate 12 high-quality hotels in the UK and one pipeline hotel (BTN 30 July 2018).

The hotel was previously sold but the arrival of the Principal portfolio provided the opportunity to return it to the IHG family and for a renovation programme to be carried out.

IHG managing director UK and Ireland Karan Khanna said: “We are excited to grow our luxury presence in Scotland. Edinburgh is a key city in our home market so it’s great to reintroduce our flagship brand.”

InterContinental Edinburgh - The George is made up of a set of Georgian townhouses built in the 1780s in the central district of New Town modernised over the years to preserve their original features within a contemporary luxury design.
