Celebrations have taken place to mark the launch of British Airways’ year-round non-stop flights between Heathrow and Pittsburgh.
The service, announced last summer (BTN 30 July 2018), operates four times a week, on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays. The route is served by BA’s newest aircraft, the Boeing B787-8 Dreamliner, with 214 seats in a three-class configuration.
Pittsburgh, in western Pennsylvania, is an important business destination and centre for high tech due to research at the University of Pittsburgh, Carnegie Mellon University and Google’s Pittsburgh office, and autonomous vehicle testing by Uber.
With the new route, BA has become the only airline to offer a direct flight from the UK to Pittsburgh. It takes the number of US destinations the airline flies to from London to 26, and the number of daily flights offered by BA and American Airlines as part of their transatlantic joint business to 67 a day.
VisitPittsburgh CEO Craig Davis said of the launch: “This is a momentous day. Our goal is to bring Pittsburgh to the world as an ideal visitor destination as well as a place to do business and this is the manifestation of that.”
