El Al goes wi-fi

Israel’s national airline, El Al, is now completing the pilot stage of an on-board wi-fi internet service for flights within Europe.  This covers 15 of the airline’s fleet consisting of the five Boeing B787 Dreamliners that have arrived to date, its entire Boeing B737-900 operation (eight) and Boeing B737-800 aircraft (two).

To mark the launch, it is offering what it calls its “basic European package”, including instant messaging, email and surfing the El Al website, as a free courtesy service until 31 October 2018.

The airline’s new internet system will allow passengers using smartphones, tablets or laptops to surf websites, connect to email, use applications and social media networks, listen to music and watch films during the flight.

The supplier of the El Al wi-fi system is Viasat, one of the leading and most innovative companies in satellite communications, offering high-speed, secure internet on flights. The service is provided through KA Band technology, the most advanced satellite broadband communication in aviation, enabling passengers to enjoy a quality high-speed surfing experience.

El Al currently flies non-stop to Tel Aviv up to three times daily from Luton using a two-class Boeing B737, and twice daily from Heathrow, this time with three-class and twin-aisle Boeing B777s.
