The future of UK airfields is under discussion later this month at an all-day conference at the Royal Aeronautical Society. It follows news that the All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on the subject (BTN 18 September) has now passed the 40-member mark.
APPG chairman Grant Shapps MP will be among speakers at the gathering, which is at the RAeS headquarters at 4 Hamilton Place, London, from 09:00 – 17:00 on 24 October. Registration is £37.50 +VAT and is now open.
In a background briefing in the context of the government’s draft strategy on the future of UK aviation, the society notes the UK is home to a number of airfields supporting a wide range of important general aviation (GA) activities.
However, it says, the number of airfields has been falling and more are under threat of closure, to be replaced by large housing developments in some cases, and with a number of market and policy conditions hindering the opening of new airfield sites.
The idea of the conference is to bring together the various parties involved in the debate to enable better understanding of general aviation issues, including the reasons for the closures and the impact on GA and wider aviation sector.
