Window on easyJet Europe

Details have emerged of the new Vienna-based European operation planned by easyJet (BTN 17 July) in a week when the airline also announced a major recruitment drive for cabin crew with most set to be based at Gatwick.

On Europe, easyJet said it planned to re-register its fleet of 110-plus aircraft based in mainland Europe. The process is planned to be completed before the UK leaves the EU.

Management of easyJet Europe will have full operational and financial control of the company, with the current director for Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, Thomas Haagensen, as managing director.

EasyJet’s outgoing CEO Carolyn McCall, who is leaving to head ITV, said setting up the new airline followed “a long and far-reaching regulatory process in Austria”, which was chosen for the Austrian Aviation Authority’s “rigorous approach” to safety.

“EasyJet Europe … will ensure the company continues to operate flights to the EU after the UK has left,” she added.

“In addition, like all other European airlines, we will continue to be a catalyst for reaching an agreement on UK and EU flight rights that will allow flights between Europe and the UK.”

On the recruitment drive, easyJet is seeking more than 1,200 permanent and fixed-term cabin crew to help fulfil growth plans over the next few years. The company announced earlier this year it would also be employing more than 450 pilots.
