RJ100 heads for St Helena

Officials at St Helena Airport are hoping to gather more data about windshear and other conditions next Friday (21 October), when an Avro RJ100 jet aircraft is scheduled to arrive for a technical stop.

The aircraft, operated by Tronos Jet Maintenance and flown by Atlantic Star Airlines, is on a delivery flight to Chile and will travel from Zurich with tech stops in the United Arab Emirates, Senegal and Ascension Island before arrival at St Helena, where the crew will overnight.

The RJ100 will be the largest aircraft to operate to St Helena Airport since ASSI certification on 10 May (BTN 16 May). Opening of the airport to commercial traffic has been delayed because of the windshear problem.

Officials say the RJ100 flight will provide the airport with additional real-time data and a pilot’s report – all part of building a more comprehensive picture of conditions. The aircraft can be configured for between 78 and 97 passenger seats but on this occasion, will be carrying some 16 non-commercial passengers, including the flight crew.

ETA at St Helena is planned to be around 15:45 local on Friday, but this has yet to be confirmed.
