MH370 search winds down

The search for Malaysia flight MH370 is expected to finish by the end of the year, the agency coordinating the search has announced.

The multi-million pound search over a 46,000sq mi area of the Indian Ocean, was launched after the aircraft disappeared in March 2014 with 239 people on board while on its way from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing.

Debris including wing, engine and cabin parts linked to the Boeing 777 has washed up in various locations but has not led to any firm evidence of what may have happened.

Investigators are now planning to carry out a detailed study of wave and wind patterns in the search area in an attempt to discover how wreckage may have travelled.

In a statement the search coordination centre said: “On its own, this information will not be able to identify the precise location of the aircraft.

“It is hoped, however, that when added to our existing knowledge and any future learnings, a specific location of the aircraft will be able to be identified."

All the sonar data from the current search is due to be released publicly by the Australian Transport Safety Bureau, which is leading the search, when the operation ends in late December.
