Music to fly by at London City

Ed Sheeran’s music is proving the star attraction in an initiative which has seen London City Airport (LCY) become the first in the UK to play tunes to passengers during security screening.

Two playlists, one of ambient electronica and the other featuring upbeat acoustic music, are broadcast throughout the day, with songs selected specially by music consultancy C-Burn.

In addition to Sheeran, performers whose work is wafted through the speaker system to soothe waiting passengers include Adele, Ben Howard, Jason Mraz and Gavin James.

The airport’s director of customer experience, Melanie Burnley, said: “It takes passengers just 20min or less to get from the front door to the departure lounge, and we wanted to enhance the customer experience with a soundtrack to security.

“So far we’ve had a very positive reaction to the musical addition – from staff and passengers.”

Top titles on a playlist compiled to coincide with the initiative include Ambient 1: Music for Airports, by Brian Eno; Leaving on a Jet Plane (John Denver); Aeroplane (Red Hot Chili Peppers); Come Fly With Me (Frank Sinatra); Fly Away (Lenny Kravitz), and We’re Going to Ibiza (Vengaboys).
