Secretary of State at Luton

easyJet and Luton Airport last Thursday welcomed the Secretary of State for Transport, Patrick McLoughlin, at the official ground breaking ceremony for a new airport terminal.

Luton recently announced a record breaking 12.3m (16.9% growth) passengers in 2015 while easyJet, the largest carrier at the airport, has just celebrated 20 years of operations, starting with a flight from Luton to Glasgow on 10 November 1995.

A recent report by independent consultancy Oxford Economics showed that the £110m transformation, planned with the support of the Department for Transport, will add £1bn to the UK economy and create an extra 10,000 jobs by 2030.

A temporary arrivals hall has been opened situated opposite the departures entrance of the main terminal building, that is to your left as you approach.  It may be familiar to some as the old terminal building, redundant but never demolished when the present structure was opened by The Queen in 1999.

Luton remains easyJet’s head office employing around 1,800 staff but it is now only the airline’s third largest base, behind Gatwick and Milan Malpensa, moving around 5m passengers a year to 51 European destinations. www.easyjet.com    www.london-luton.co.uk
