The air transport industry, and Westminster in all its facets, gathered on the Terrace of Parliament last week for the 10th anniversary reception of Sustainable Aviation, the lobbying alliance.
Jonathon Counsell, Group Head of Sustainability, IAG, welcomed Aviation Minster Robert Goodwill, Louise Ellman (Labour), Chair of the Commons Transport Select Committee and also Jim Fitzpatrick, also of Labour, MP for Popular, which borders London City Airport and previously Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State at the Department for Transport.
“On climate change we have improved our fuel efficiency by 11% and since 2010 by over 2.2% per year exceeding the industry target of 1.5% per year. As well as through operating efficiencies this has been largely achieved through the acquisition of 470 aircraft worth $50bn resulting in a saving of 16 million tons of CO2 – which includes 6 mt through credits surrendered through the EU Emissions Trading Scheme – the first market based measure to include aviation.
“Through the acquisition of newer, quieter aircraft such as the Airbus A380 and the Boeing Dreamliner we have reduced the primary airport noise contours by 14% significantly lowering the number of people affected by aircraft noise by tens of thousands across the UK.” www.sustainableaviation.co.uk

Barry Graham,
Not sure what the connection is between climate change and fuel efficiency, unless he still believes the myth that man is responsible for climate change which of course is a ridiculous idea.
