Russian fleet for CityJet

A new generation of Russian twinjets is on the way to London City Airport as CityJet prepares to replace its fleet of four-engine Avro RJ85s with the Sukhoi SSJ100 it was announced at the annual European Regions Airlines Association (ERAA) conference in Berlin last week.

The airline has ordered 15 of the new aircraft with the first entering charter service next year and moving on to scheduled operations from 2017.

The SSJ100 is built by Superjet International, a joint venture between the Sukhoi Corporation of Russia and Alenia Aermacchi of Italy. CityJet is the first European airline to order the aircraft.

The 98-seat jet is the first aircraft in its class to offer five abreast seating with a 32in seat pitch. The cabin height of 2m (6.5ft) is claimed to put it ahead of competitor aircraft.

CityJet is taking four aircraft next year and 11 more during 2017. It has options on another 10.

Pat Byrne, Executive Chairman, CityJet, described the SSJ100 as a “game changing” aircraft for the company. “We believe our customers will love it,” he added. Alison Chambers reports in full next week.  www.cityjet.com
