Trouble ahead for Lufthansa

Lufthansa’s pilot union Vereinigung Cockpit (VC) – which had agreed to arbitration of all open collective wage agreements in May – said last Monday (6 July) that mediation has failed, raising the possibility of new strike action at the height of the summer travel season.

According to VC, Lufthansa did not want to discuss all disputed topics and that an agreement to hold off on strikes until the end of July was no longer valid.

Lufthansa said that it regretted the union’s move and called on pilots to re-enter talks.

The pilots had also hoped mediation would resolve other outstanding issues, including the expansion of pan-European low-cost carrier Eurowings.

The pilots are not the only pay dispute Lufthansa is grappling with.  Cabin crew union UFO has also threatened strikes in a row over pay and pensions, while talks with union Verdi for around 30,000 staff have been postponed until September to give the two sides more time to debate pension scheme changes.   www.lufthansa.com   www.vcockpit.de
