Peter Woodman retires

His name may not be familiar to most, and his face unknown, but Peter Woodman’s words would have been read by virtually every person in the land over the last 36 years.  Everywhere on the globe where English language newspapers are produced has used his copy.  Peter Woodman, Transport Correspondent of the Press Association (PA) has retired.

And quite why he headed the transport team and not the sports desk nobody is sure.  Peter loves his cricket, has been seen at Wimbledon, and is a long suffering Spurs fan.

Peter was accurate and fair in his reporting, anomalous by nature of his PA role, but always wanting to be ‘first with the news’.

Already an established PA reporter, he was called out in an emergency to cover the sinking of the Herald of Free Enterprise in 1987.  His bosses were impressed.  Transport, and particularly air transport, was to become his forte.  He recalls four Concorde trips including the last Kennedy – Heathrow, and the first ever revenue flight of the Airbus A380, by Singapore Airlines.  Virgin Atlantic trips were popular with Peter, (Sir) Richard Branson always ready to bend his ear.  www.pressassociation.com
