London City redevelopment

A £16m redevelopment programme is set to transform departures at London City Airport (LCY).

Work has started to redevelop the main western pier.  This was built for the airport opening in 1987 and has changed little over the years.  The holding lounges were built for 50-passenger de Havilland Dash 7 aircraft and larger Embraer E-series, now the main user.

The rebuilt pier will create a bright, open-plan space with modern seating, electronic boarding gates, workspaces, quiet areas and charging points.

Declan Collier, CEO of London City Airport, said:  “We are creating more space, more seating, and more comfort for our passengers.  People choose LCY for its unrivalled location so close to central London, the speed of check-in and arrivals, and for the quality of the experience here.  Without development, that experience was at risk of being compromised but this multi-million pound investment will make the new Western Pier a cutting-edge extension of the departure lounge.”

Work is expected to be completed by Summer 2016 under ‘permitted development’ – which means it does not need planning permission.  The pier is not part of the City Airport Development Programme, planning permission for which was passed by the local council and then turned down by Boris Johnson.  London City Airport has mounted an appeal against that decision.  www.londoncityairport.com

Graham Stephenson, London

London City Airport is a brilliant example of excellent planning and development. It is one airport that it is a pleasure to use because everything is so well thought out. So much is achieved in a minimum of space and everyone who works there tries to make the visitors experience a good one.
