Frankfurt Airport expands

Despite local objections over the environmental impact the supervisory board of Frankfurt Airport (FRA) has given the go-ahead to build a third terminal.

The decision to press on with a project that will cost up to €3bn followed a study commissioned by the local Hesse state government to look at the airport's future capacity requirements.

Fraport (the airport holding company) said:

"We have thoroughly assessed and scrutinised all possible alternatives before deciding in favour of Terminal 3," noted Stefan Schulte, Chief Executive of Fraport.

"We are very well aware of our responsibility to our shareholders, our customers, passengers and employees, as well as to the people living in the region."

The airport last year served 59.6m passengers, a 2.6% increase on 2015.

Fraport says that in its current form FRA has a maximum capacity of about 64m passengers a year and it needs to start building a new terminal now to meet future demand.  In total, Fraport had previously said that the terminal could serve an extra 25m passengers a year.

Construction of the new terminal will start at the end of this year with completion of the project by 2022.  www.frankfurt-airport.de
