Southend to Slovenia

Adria Airways (JP), the national airline of Slovenia, and a member of Star Alliance, will launch scheduled services from Maribor to London’s Southend Airport on 1 June.  The two-hour flight will run on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday with A319-100 and CRJ-900 aircraft.

The new route is seen as a breakthrough for Maribor Airport where Adria will be the sole carrier this summer.  The airport has seen a very limited number of passengers during recent years.  The last scheduled services took place in 2008, when Ryanair left the airport due to poor loads after having served it from Stansted for a couple of months.  All air traffic to Ljubljana was relocated to Maribor for a brief period in 2010 during runway overhaul in Ljubljana.

Maribor is in the northeast of Slovenia just 11km from the Austrian border.  It was European Capital of Culture in 2012.  As an eminent wine growing area it is home to one of the biggest and oldest classic wine cellars in Europe (at more than 20,000sqm) which rests right underneath the city.

According to Marko Gros, Managing Director of Aerodroma Maribor, a further two routes are expected to be announced this summer.  www.maribor-airport.si/en   www.adria.si/en
