TransAsia air crash

Officials in Taiwan say they are investigating why both engines on a TransAsia Airlines ATR 72-600 were not functioning when it crashed on 4 February killing around 40 passengers and crew.  Fifteen were saved which says a great deal for the integrity of the fuselage, the aircraft filmed by a driver as it crashed over a main road.

Data from the "black box" flight recorders retrieved from the wreckage suggests the pilots shut down one engine after the other lost power.

Officials said that it was unclear why the left engine had been turned off, especially as the plane is able to fly with just one functioning engine.

Details released show the flight path of GE235, more or less a straight line from Taipei’s Songsham Airport.  The pilot missed some buildings and appears to have been making for open space the other side of the Keelung River.

On 23 July 2014 TransAsia Airways Flight GE222 crashed into buildings during an approach to land in bad weather at Magong Airport, Penghu Island, Taiwan.  The ATR 72-500 operating the service was travelling from Kaohsiung International Airport with 54 passengers and four crew members; only 10 survived.  This accident is currently under investigation by the Taiwanese Aviation Safety Council.   www.tna.com.tw/en/index.aspx   www.atraircraft.com

Please note as a general rule it is not BTN policy to show air crashes.  With this incidence a unique video can easily be found on the web.   www.theguardian.com/world/2015/feb/04/taiwan-plane-crash-lands-in-river
