The London-based Aviation Club of the United Kingdom kicks of its 2015 programme next Wednesday (11 February) with CAA Chair Dame Deirdre Hutton as Guest of Honour. Dame Deirdre became Chair of the Civil Aviation Authority on 1 August 2009 replacing Sir Roy McNulty and was previously Chair of the Food Standards Agency until July 2009. She has served on a number of public bodies and has considerable experience of corporate governance, risk-based regulation and consumer policy. She is Honorary Vice President of the Trading Standards Institute. She sits as a Non-Executive on the board of Thames Water Utilities Ltd and Castle Trust.
Today the CAA is not the all-powerful body it once was, having devolved many of its duties to the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) acting as its UK agency.
One question bound to be asked during the post speech session is the controversial Biggin Hill v Northolt High Court ruling (See BTN 26 January) where a judicial review has been refused and the CAA required to pay its own costs. At RAF airfields who sets the rules for quasi-official movements such as the Royal Squadron and ministerial flights using essentially civil aircraft? Do they fly to the same safety requirements?
Final bookings close this morning (Monday 9 February). 01737 842392. secretary@aviationclub.org.uk
