Heathrow has won the support of easyJet in London's runway expansion race who said that it would start flying from the capital's largest airport if the government chooses to increase its capacity."We can say with great confidence that easyJet would operate from Heathrow if a new runway is built," the airline said in a report submitted to the task force as part of a consultation.
Potential easyJet flights from Heathrow would provide 19 new destinations from the airport and lower fares, the airline said, adding that its tickets are typically 40% cheaper than those of incumbent operators.
EasyJet said expanding Heathrow would provide the greatest benefits for passengers and Britain's economy.
The airline has also announced that it is going to concentrate all its activities at Gatwick North later in 2016, British Airways moving to the largely rebuilt southern terminal.
In another twist to the future of the London airports, ABTA, the travel agents organisation has come out with a statement saying that both Gatwick and Heathrow should be allowed to expand. It would be up to the airports to sort out the finances. www.easyjet.com www.heathrow.com
