DHL Express has announced the launch of a helicopter delivery service from Heathrow to Canary Wharf in a bid to slash delivery times between the US and UK.Transit times between the company’s hub at Heathrow and the docklands centre will be approximately 20 minutes, significantly less than the current minimum two-hour journey by road. The time saved by such a journey would allow DHL to guarantee overnight delivery from America.
The move comes after requests were received from existing clients to provide a speedier service between financial centres and John Pearson, DHL European Chief Executive, who was keen to point out that “this is not a marketing gimmick. Cutting the travel time from the airport translates into a full day’s saving. A document can be sent from Chicago and be in London by 2pm the next day.”
The service will make use of a Bell 206 Jet Ranger helicopter, which has a load capacity of 300kg, equivalent to some 2,000 documents weighing 150g each.
The service is not entirely new, as DHL launched a similar service in New York in the 1970s and more recently in Los Angeles and the delivery giant has plans to launch in Chicago, following the opening of its global forwarding facility in the city. www.dhl.com/en.html
