Gatwick Airport is going regional with a series of events designed to help sway the Airport Commission that it should get the first new runway in the south east. Cornwall was first last week with further presentations planned throughout England, Scotland and Wales.
The regional visits begin as Birmingham Airport announced its support of a Gatwick second runway because of the benefits it offers to regional growth. Paul Kehoe, CEO of Birmingham Airport, commented: "Growth at Gatwick will support demand for greater connectivity, improving value for passengers flying from the South East and supporting the continued growth of our regions.”
Gatwick will use the sessions with regional Chambers of Commerce to outline why its expansion plans would deliver greater benefits and connectivity for UK businesses based on a number of key areas. It already serves more regional destinations than Heathrow whose domestic services have been progressively cut back. Currently 15 UK airports serve Gatwick against seven at Heathrow.
The dates and locations for the events hosted by Gatwick and British Chambers of Commerce are:
Edinburgh Chamber of Commerce & Enterprise – Thursday 9 October
Liverpool Chamber of Commerce – Thursday 16 October
Hampshire Chamber of Commerce (Farnborough) – Wednesday 29 October
Inverness Chamber of Commerce – Tuesday 4 November
Aberdeen & Grampian Chamber of Commerce – Monday 10 November
North-East Chamber of Commerce (Newcastle) – Tuesday 11 November
South Wales Chamber of Commerce – Wednesday 19 November
Sheffield Chamber of Commerce – date to be confirmed
