Sharing with the IATA AGM, World Routes (The 20th World Route Development Forum) is probably the most important annual gathering of the world’s airlines. It may not attract the ‘A’ list of airline Chief Executives, although many do attend. It is essentially a working opportunity for the airlines and airports to get together and plan for mutual opportunities. There was a record attendance this year at Chicago last week and already people are planning ahead for Durban (South Africa) 19-22 September 2015.
At the speechmaking one CEO stood out, Emirates boss Tim Clark. He urged his competitors to be more transparent in sharing information after the shooting down of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 to ensure such a tragedy is never repeated.
Clark calls MH17 a “game changer” as it destroyed the illusion that countries can be relied upon to regulate safety in their airspace when a civil war is playing out. “When somebody knew these weapons had come in, there should have been an automatic airspace closure,” he said. www.routesonline.com
