The lead Airbus A320neo flew for the first time last week, airborne for around two and a half hours. Carrying the registration F-WNEO, it was flown by Airbus Experimental Test Pilots Philippe Pellerin and Etienne Miche de Malleray.
To date Airbus has won 2,661 firm orders for the new aircraft from 60 airlines. The A320neo family encompasses the A319neo, A320neo and A321neo, seating up to 160, 189 and 240 passengers. Certification is due in just one year’s time.
Airbus claims a 20% fuel reduction with the new aircraft. It is also offering airlines the option of increased passenger numbers through its latest cabin innovations. These include new generation slim line seats, and ‘Space-Flex’ rear restroom with revised galley arrangements. The authorities will recertificate the A320 family with increased seating by end 2014. www.airbus.com
