Gatwick luggage problems

The problems experienced by travellers at Gatwick Airport over the first weekend of August seem to have been resolved.  The airport and baggage handling company Swissport brought in extra staff to deal with what was becoming a serious situation with some people reported to be waiting up to three hours for their cases and other items to appear at the carousels.

Some people were told to go home without their bags with a free delivery service provided.  The problem has been exacerbated by the size of the delivery halls, plenty large enough for normal use, but distinctly overcrowded at maximum waiting times.  There is no provision to buy water and other essentials, although rest rooms are provided.  With most people now carrying mobile phones on their travels one remedy for families was to send part of the group landside to make use of the facilities available. But you cannot return!
