Visually impaired travellers can now benefit with the introduction of ‘Audio Description’ on movies as part of its in-flight entertainment system.Called ‘ICE’ (information, communication and entertainment) the programme currently offers Audio Description soundtracks on 16 Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures films including Frozen, Saving Mr Banks, Cars 2, Monsters University, Marvel’s The Avengers, Toy Story 3 and all four Pirates of the Caribbean movies. Audio Description, increasingly common in cinemas and TV, is a recorded narration explaining the scene during the gaps in dialogue, while the film soundtrack continues at its normal pace.
At present Emirates offers over 600 channels of entertainment on its worldwide services including BBC News, films and recorded TV, plus audio and games. It is contracted to the OnAir wi-fi satellite network for live ground communications by internet, text and voice. www.emirates.com
