The situation continues to deteriorate in Libya. Flights to Tripoli have been cancelled by British Airways with intense fighting still going on between government and rebel forces.
With one of the worst outbreaks of violence since Gaddafi's ousting and state authority on the verge of collapse, Britain has ordered citizens to evacuate. The British Embassy has closed and the staff taken out by the Royal Navy. On 27 July, a British diplomatic convoy was subject to an attempted car-jacking on the road between Tripoli and Zawiya. Shots were fired but no one was injured.
France, Germany and the Netherlands have also issued similar warnings. "The situation is extremely unpredictable and uncertain," the German foreign ministry said. "German nationals are at increased risk of kidnapping and attacks." The US Embassy was evacuated and embassy staff fled on land to Tunisia.
Although Libyan Airlines flights to UK are suspended, sister company, Afriqiyah, has resumed services between Tripoli and Gatwick. www.libyanairlines.co.uk
