'A Very British Airline'

The hugely hyped series 'A Very British Airline', all about BA, opened last Monday and follows tonight (9 June) with 60 minutes of product study that for non-industry people might have proved to be boring (or enlightening).  There were some blatant inaccuracies (British Airways did not invent the Premium Economy concept, Virgin Atlantic did) and BA’s Managing Director Keith Williams was once again unseen.  Willie Walsh, the one time shy Chief Executive of BA owner IAG, was very visible.

The programme focused on three themes.  Staff recruitment (there were over 5,000 applicants for 800 places) took us through the initial introduction to the airline emphasising how the pay and conditions are now equal to the ‘low-cost’ carriers.  It seemed all girls initially but the trainee who lost his way was a fellow.

The engineering base featured too.  BA has a complicated mixture of cabin arrangements and we were left wondering if there would be a ‘flat seat’ A321 on the Tel Aviv service.

Viewers saw the mouth-watering preparations for the maiden A380 long haul service, only to be told by a regular First Class customer that the food was less than it should have been.

We look forward to tonight’s 21:00 slot and an introduction to Chengdu (and more Walsh).  www.ba.com
