Norwegian expands at Gatwick

Gatwick is to see further expansion by Norwegian, the Oslo-based airline launching new routes to Warsaw and Berlin on 15 September.  There is no competition from Gatwick to either of the Warsaw airports, but for Berlin (Schönefeld) easyJet flies four times daily to what is a major hub for them.

The Warsaw route will operate to the main Chopin airport daily (except Saturday).  The same schedule will be introduced to Berlin Schönefeld and the airline will also increase the number of flights between Gatwick and Copenhagen from four to five daily departures.

Norwegian established its first UK base at Gatwick in May 2013.  During the first quarter of 2014, Norwegian had a market share of 10% at Gatwick.  Today, the company operates 375 weekly flights and 33 routes to and from the airport.

The airline has also announced plans to operate a Boeing 787 Dreamliner service to the United States later this summer but this is being vigorously challenged by US interests claiming that Norwegian is not an EU airline, its Dublin registered subsidiary seen as a way around the rules.  www.norwegian.com
