Goodwood’s Festival of Speed

For those with long memories, and for a new generation of motor sports fans, the place to be over the long weekend of 26/29 June will be Goodwood.  Rauno Aaltonen is to revive memories of his 1967 Monte Carlo Rally win by taking to the Festival of Speed rally stage in a similar Mini Cooper S to the one in which he claimed that victory; in fact, it is the ex-works car in which he finished seventh in the 1964 event.

Minis won the Monte in 1964 (Paddy Hopkirk), 1965 (Timo Mäkinen) and Aaltonen in 1967.  In 1966 Mäkinen won again with Aaltonen third and Hopkirk fourth, Roger Clark’s Lotus Cortina coming second.  All the British cars were disqualified under a dubious headlight rule with the fifth placed Citroen taking the discredited honours.  All three Minis appeared on the stage as the stars of the following week’s ITV’s Sunday Night at the London Palladium.  Point taken!

The original Mini is much smaller than its present day highly successful successor.  Business Travel News recommends taking the long uphill walk to the special forest stage to watch Aaltonen perform.  He will make two timed runs on the gravel track each day.  http://grrc.goodwood.com/section/festival-of-speed/#/0
