Jets on BBC TV

Classic Air Force’s (CAF) unique collection of Cold War jets is expected to figure strongly in a programme to be shown on BBC2 on Friday 8 November.  Going out at 21:00, Hot Jets is the first of two episodes focusing on the Cold War period, and the aircraft that formed the defences of both sides throughout a knife-edge period of world history.

Film crews were at CAF’s new museum in Newquay, as well as shooting considerable footage at the organisation’s long-standing maintenance and restoration base in Coventry.  Presenter James Holland was given first-hand experience of a 1950s jet when he accompanied CAF’s Chief Pilot Jon Corley on a flight in a Hunting Percival Jet Provost trainer.

The BBC shooting schedule called for footage of the Provost landing, but it proved impossible to find a suitable camera position on the ground.  Fortunately, a solution was available using one of Classic Air Force’s mini video cameras, attached under the tail of their Piper PA28.  Jon Corley in the Jet Provost and CAF’s Trevor Bailey in the Piper flew between the clouds to capture some stunning air-to-air footage, capped off by a superb landing sequence as the two aircraft returned to Newquay, the Provost landing while the Piper performed a “go-round”. www.classicairforce.com
