Work on an extension to the passenger terminal at Southend Airport has got under way. Kier has been appointed as the key contractor for the work with a new arrivals facility scheduled to be ready at the end of May 2013. By Christmas 2013 the work should be complete taking the airport capacity up towards a 2020 target of two million passengers.
Southend Airport’s new terminal became operational earlier this year with the introduction of easyJet services and the opening of a dedicated railway station to Stratford (and the Olympic Park) and London Liverpool Street. The airport was also officially recognised by IATA as a London airport.
Southend Airport currently has 70 easyJet departures each week to Amsterdam, Alicante, Barcelona, Belfast, Faro, Geneva, Ibiza, Jersey, Malaga and Mallorca – with flights to Geneva due to start in December and to Venice in February 2013. For summer 2013 Berlin and Krakow are added, and a fourth aircraft.
Aer Lingus has three daily return services to Dublin, where travellers are able to take advantage of transatlantic connections to Boston, Chicago, New York and Orlando. There is also a 4-star Holiday Inn within walking distance of the terminal. This 129-room hotel features a panoramic rooftop restaurant plus private dining and high tech conference facilities. www.southendairport.com
