Airlines are always keen to tell their users, and the media, of new routes and promotions. By the same token, with some fine exceptions, they continue to drop destinations without a ‘by your leave’.
There can be a number of reasons for the cessation of a service and BTNews will campaign vigorously for this kind of news information to be properly published. Platitudes (“we are sorry etc”) on their website are not sufficient.
Manchester is to lose this autumn two of its daily connections to Belgium.
Air France subsidiary CityJet will drop its Manchester – Antwerp service from mid-September. It is the only carrier on the route. At one time it operated a highly successful route between Manchester and London City, but with the vast improvement of the Virgin Trains service passenger numbers quickly dropped away. Likewise Liverpool. CityJet serves Antwerp from London City, with up to five flights per day, using Fokker 50 aircraft.
Also departing is Flybe to Brussels International leaving Brussels Airlines as the only carrier on the route. Ryanair flies to Charleroi (Brussels South in Ryanair language), which is about 40 miles from Brussels (and 80 miles from Antwerp). www.manchesterairport.co.uk
