Classic Air Force

AIRBASE, the Coventry Airport ‘living aviation museum’ is to relocate to Newquay-Cornwall Airport at the end of September, within the brand new Aerohub Enterprise Zone.  This follows publication by Sir Peter Rigby’s Patriot Aerospace Group of plans to develop Coventry Airport West, which it owns, and where the AIRBASE operation is presently sited.

Rebranded as The Classic Air Force, the former Coventry aircraft’s new home is expected to open just before Easter 2013.  It will be housed within a 60,000sq ft hangar built to accommodate the BAe Nimrod and other large surveillance aircraft.  The massive 861 acre site, which was once RAF St Mawgan, includes a 2744m runway, one of the longest in the country.

The Classic Air Force presently operates around 20 vintage aircraft mostly from the 1940s and 1950s, but not all military types.  These include DH Dragon Rapide, Vampire and Venom; English Electric Canberra and the Gloster Meteor T7, the world’s oldest twin-engined flying jet.  When fully operational next summer AIRBASE should prove to be a big boost to an area returning once again to its glory days as one of the UK’s most popular holiday regions. www.airbasecoventry.com
