ScotAirways is 25 years old

To the public who travel on scheduled airlines, and even to some of those who use its extensive charter services ScotAirways may not mean anything.  However on Tuesday (26 April) it will celebrate 25 years of operations.  Many of its contemporaries are long gone.

ScotAirways started life in 1986 as Suckling Airways, owned by Merlyn and the late Roy Suckling (Roy passed away in 2008), at Ipswich’s grass airfield, moving to Cambridge Airport two years later.  The airline was rebranded as ScotAirways in 1999 when Brian Souter of Stagecoach plc became Chairman and majority shareholder.  The airline introduced a Dundee to London City service and added the fast Dornier 328 turboprop, still the mainstay of its fleet.

Brian Souter (and his sister Ann Gloag) sold their interest back to the Sucklings in 2006, the airline then forming a partnership with Air France/CityJet.

Today, continuing as ScotAirways, the company provides contract hire (ACMI) to other airlines plus ad hoc charters for football teams, politicians, music artists and corporates with a six-strong 328 fleet.  Merlyn Suckling is still in charge. www.scotairways.co.uk
