Michael O’Leary, CEO, Ryanair, is holding a press conference at the Andaz London Liverpool Street, 14:00 on Tuesday 30 August. As usual the Dubliner is being coy about the details but ‘one thing for sure’ (and say it with a Irish lilt), he will be talking about the airline’s winter programme and how well it is doing.
He may even praise the Elizabeth Line and its links to prospective customers in the west of London, and Kent, who have previously found the idea of going to Stansted daunting. And comment on the ‘Stansted Slow’ – our words not his – two stops along the way and fares sometimes in excess of some of those by Ryanair to far off places.
Also likely to be praised is the refurbishment of Stansted, which has not cost him a penny, Ryanair representing about 75% of the passenger throughput.
O’Leary has often on these occasions prophesied doom and gloom for European airlines, but most of them are still around, albeit after a rescue (Norwegian), and Italian juggle in the case of Alitalia (ATI), plus a takeover as with Air Belin. Monarch was also long-haul and not quite the same as the others.
He might even say he was misquoted when he said the days of cheap fares are gone forever. We shall see?
Please note the Editor-in-Chief is away at this time and so will not be subject to the wrath of O’Leary and even, sometimes, the praise. But BTN will cover the event!
