Passengers on a Wizz Air flight from Tel Aviv (TLV) to Gatwick (LGW) 03:00 last Monday morning (19 April) found themselves landing at Doncaster/Robin Hood Airport some 200 miles to the north and 3½ hours by train during normal times. The limited staff available in the early morning were bemused by the flight, immigration perplexed with the variety of passports involved, including Belarus Russia and Ukraine. Taxi availability was said to be very sparse and the promised coaches failed to appear.
The flight, W95752, was delayed Easter Monday by 3½hrs departing TLV, which happens with all services from time to time, and with LGW failing to accept the service, extra fuel loaded. Luton was mentioned as the diversion airport but once airborne passengers were told that Doncaster was to be the final destination.
A Wizz Air spokesperson apologised: “We did all we could do to help our customers get back to Gatwick, however the UK Easter holidays – and lack of available bus and train transfers – made this extremely difficult to manage. As a result, Wizz Air has now been in touch with all those affected passengers to apologise directly and accept claims for transportation to be reimbursed.”
Wizz Air did appear to suspend the new Gatwick – Tel Aviv last week route but it is now back operating.
