It happens only once every ten years. Floriade is back. Considered as one of the world's great international horticulture experiences the 2022 show is in Almere, a short distance from Amsterdam. It is scheduled to run until 9 October.
Reaching the venue is easy enough via public transport writes Eli Kaufman. There is a direct train from Schiphol (26min journey) or Amsterdam (20min) and from the central station in Almere a shuttle bus or a boat. Plenty of parking space and being the Netherlands arrival by bike is also very popular and encouraged.
The grounds are enormous and include pavilions of 20 countries showcasing their horticultural advances, a range of booths of local businesses, culture and art establishments, a cable-car offering views from above, plenty of refreshment options and of course the wonderful fragrances and colours of flowers everywhere.
There's a strong focus on sustainability and the grounds are suitable for visitors with disabilities.
Visiting on the opening day meant the site was not too crowded, but on the other hand meant that not all pavilions were ready, there was still work going on in a few of them.
Talking to the exhibitors was fun, during the day got to taste traditional Ethiopian coffee, watching Indian dances and chatting with the gentleman in front of the partly-constructed pavilion of Suriname and discovering that he was the Ambassador to the Netherlands.
Getting to Amsterdam is easy via Eurostar and most UK airports. An alternative is to take a Dutch river cruise and make the most of the mooring. Put it down as a must for 2022.
