Israel promotes Eilat

Eilat could again become a destination from London with Luton Airport gaining the business.

The Israel Ministry of Tourism has published an invitation to airlines to receive financial support to operate flights from Europe to Ramon Airport in the coming winter season.

Ovda Airport, 40 miles to the north, was the international gateway to Israel’s popular Red Sea resort gateway in times gone by.  From the UK both Monarch and Wizz airlines served it on a regular basis.  When the ultra-modern Ramon Airport, just 11 miles from the city, opened in January 2019 for domestic flights only, international carriers were slow to follow.  The outbreak of Covid just 12 months later curtailed any plans for the winter season of 2020.

Wizz is thought to be considering the route with easyJet already serving Aqaba just across the border.

Named after Ilan (Israel’s first astronaut) and son Asaf (a military pilot), Ramon is a very easy airport to use with some of the most advanced security offerings.

Israel Minister of Tourism, Yoel Razvozov, said: “Bringing tourism back to Israel in the winter months, and in particular to Eilat and the South, is an important objective in the Tourism Ministry. I see great importance in transforming Israel into an attractive destination for tourists from around the world, with an emphasis on those countries which are frozen through the winter months”.
