Luton DART nearly ready

Another project delayed by the pandemic, the four-minute DART (Direct Air-Rail Transit) automated people mover ride between Luton Parkway station and the airport terminal is due to open in August.

With the connection it will be possible to arrive at London’s St Pancras station in less than 30min of leaving the airport.

Two non-stop EMR (East Midlands Railway trains per hour will offer a journey time of 21 minutes.  Thameslink suburban services link through Farringdon to the Elizabeth Line, and London Bridge to the South East network and also Gatwick Airport.  EMR trains start at Corby and stop at a number of intermediate stations before reaching Luton Parkway.

The connection is a major boost for the airport and for the time being completes the upgrade project with its large ground floor security inspection area, and extensive retail complex, one of the best laid out of any regional airport.  On the negative side Luton has no airbridges, but plenty of stands linking direct to the terminal building, and there is still no fully covered way from the multi-storey car park which now offers a meet and greet service.
