With Putin’s war against Ukraine the British Government has banned Russian airlines from the UK. Also Belavia, the flag carrier and national airline of Belarus. Airport Coordination Ltd, responsible for all landing and take-off positions at the UK’s airports, and 46 around the world, has confirmed to Business Travel News the flight embargo by Westminster. This means that Aeroflot’s slots at Heathrow have effectively been frozen and are available temporarily for reallocation on an ad hoc, non-historic basis to other airlines.
For Belavia, it is a similar situation. They have slots at Gatwick and are also banned, since May 2021. Their slots are frozen too and are being provisionally redistributed to other airlines.
With Heathrow slots use not number one priority at the moment for airlines it might be an opportunity for a new ambitious carrier to come in, perhaps showing solidarity with Ukraine.
