London City travel problems

There is likely to be serious difficulties in reaching London City Airport (LCY) going into the new year, but they can be overcome.

For a 17-week period 15 January until mid-May 2022 the Northern Line between Kennington and Moorgate will be closed.

The Northern line Bank station provides one of the easiest interchanges to the Docklands Light Railway (DLR) and its London City Airport/Woolwich Arsenal branch.  To change to and from the Central line means considerable walking in a very complex under-the-ground environment.

The Northern line is the main provider of Bank services to Kings Cross/St Pancras, Euston and London Bridge main line stations and the northern suburbs, plus as far south as Morden. Tower Hill (Circle and District line) is part of the Bank complex and provides a link with the DLR at the nearby Tower Gateway and will operate as usual.

It is suggested that for the early months of next year airport travellers use Canning Town as the main interface with the DLR, the Jubilee line offering links to all the Underground.  The DLR services to Stratford are affected.  If the Elizabeth line is open prior to the completion of the Bank works an alternative way to travel to LCY is making a complex change at Canary Wharf to the DLR Poplar Station, or passing the airport and taking the DLR in the other direction at Woolwich Arsenal.

BTN will update readers from all over the world who use London City Airport over the next ten weeks as London prepares for one of its major transport disruptions in many a year.
