The Dubai Air Show 14-18 November is expected to see the first public showing of the brand new Boeing 777X with its folding composite wings.
The aircraft first flew in January 2020 and would have been expected to make its debut at Farnborough that year. Paris this year was also cancelled and this suited Boeing who could carry on the certification programme without any disruptions. First deliveries, due to Lufthansa, are likely to be announced at the show.
A highlight of the aircraft is its massive GE9x engines. They are almost as large as the fuselage of the Boeing 737 and have a diameter of 11ft 2in (3.4m). This compares to 9ft 8in (2.95m) on the Airbus A380’s Trent 900 engines.
Two variants are available called the Dash 8 with 384 passengers and a range of 8730nm, and the Dash 9 with up to 426 travellers capable of flying 7285 miles.
Orders for the aircraft currently stand at 320 including Lufthansa (20), Etihad (25), Qatar (60) and British Airways (18).
The folding wings are because of the same problem with aircraft carriers. Modern airports are not designed for aircraft with a total wing span of 233ft. They will not fit into the apron space!
