Aurigny's debts

The island parliament of Guernsey has voted to write off the debts of its flag carrier Aurigny Air Services agreeing to spend £62.9m recapitalising the company.

The States of Guernsey, as the parliament and government of the British dependency of Guernsey are called, was asked to inject £46.8m into the company and also to cover its 2021 losses, projected to be £16.1m.

The plan – approved by 35 votes to one with two abstentions – foresees Aurigny becoming “an economic and social enabler more efficiently and more sustainably” and growing “financially self-sufficient as it recovers from the pandemic and indicates that it will start returning modest profits from 2023 onwards.”  BTN has reported on plans to only operate the ATR series aircraft in the future.  Airline CEO Nico Bezuidenhout said that he hoped the airline could become profitable again by 2023. There are plans to extend the runway at Alderney island to accommodate the ATR.

During the debate, Deputy Peter Roffey said as part of the move to profitability there would be "exciting announcements" including code-sharing agreements with big airlines.
