Guest of Honour at next the Aviation Club of the United Kingdom RAC luncheon is Willie Walsh, Director General of IATA.The event, on Wednesday 13 October, comes just after the IATA AGM in Boston. Walsh will be very briefed on the event, the first true get together of the airlines industry since the pandemic broke out in February 2020.
Walsh needs little introduction to BTN readers, sponsored by Aer Lingus at the then Oxford Air Training School, later an Airbus A320 Captain before becoming Chief Executive of the airline. He left after a failed management buyout attempt, but fell on his feet as CEO, British Airways, taking over from Australian (later Sir) Rod Eddington. Walsh created IAG as its first CEO, before just 12 months ago replacing Alexandre de Juniac at IATA in the vital role as the leader of the great majority of world airlines.
In recent months he has been very critical of the British government’s attitude towards commercial air transport, a view echoed by the industry.
The October lunch is followed on 30 November by Akbar Al Baker, CEO of Qatar Airways.

It will be interesting to see if Mr Walsh attacks the British Government. I don’t suppose they will be represented on the top table. MG
