Heathrow is to return as a destination for Air Astana. The national airlines of Kazakhstan, 49% owned by BAE Systems, will initially fly twice weekly from the capital Nur-Sultan on a Wednesday and Saturday with the service introduction set for 18 September.
Flights will be operated by the latest Airbus A321LR aircraft, with a flight time of 7hr 15min outbound to London and 6hr 30min on the return to Nur-Sultan.
Air Astana was established as the national flag carrier in 2002 and today operates around 60 national and international routes from its hubs at Almaty, the commercial centre, and Nur-Sultan, the capital. Currently it operates a fleet of 24 aircraft, mainly Airbus 320 series, with five Embraer 190s for domestic flights and three Boeing 767s, due to be replaced in 2023 by Boeing Dreamliners. The airline has been headed since 2005 by Peter Foster, formerly with Cathay Pacific. In Europe it also flies to Amsterdam and Frankfurt.
As things stand passengers travelling to Kazakhstan are required to present a negative Covid-19 test taken 72hr prior to entering the country.
