Glyn Jones, managing director of Southend Airport, put on a bright face when talking to Sky News last Wednesday, but did not disguise the fact that the airport will have had no scheduled traffic for the first half of this year.
“We’ve kept the airport operational and fully up to scratch with extended training, plus charter flights and GA activities,” he said. Southend is a major base for aircraft engineering support. “The truth is we have had zero airline traffic up to this point of time. I expect things to pick up for July and August but it comes down to government decisions. As with all airports, large and small, we have had no Westminster direct assistance since the outbreak of the pandemic.”
In 2019 a record 2.15m passengers passed though Southend Airport. In 2020 this collapsed to 147k, or just 6%.
Ryanair and Wizz are expected to be the two major carriers into the airport when the restrictions are lifted.
Some 10 destinations are anticipated:
ALC | Alicante |
AGP | Malaga |
FAO | Faro |
CFU | Corfu |
OTP | Bucharest – Henri Coanda |
DUB | Dublin |
PMI | Palma de Mallorca |
REU | Reus |
BGO | Bergen |
BES | Brest – by mid-summer |
