ANA’s hands-free loo doors

Japanese airline ANA is installing a new lavatory door in its latest ‘Care Promise’ initiative to overcome Covid-19 challenges.

The toilet is equipped with a large internal securing knob and an additional external handle so that passengers can use their elbows to unlock the entrance.

Because the door mechanism is different to those found on other aircraft, signage has been placed near what the Americans call “the bathroom” to provide operational instructions.

The initial installation will be on aircraft serving domestic routes, while ANA hopes to introduce the system to its entire fleet including long-haul international services in the future.
