MG in iconic breakthrough

One of the world’s great sports car brands is about to reveal it is thinking for the future at the Shanghai Auto Show 21-28 April.

When Nanjing Automobile Group (SAIC), a leading Chinese auto manufacturer, purchased the seemingly doomed MG business in 2005 it appeared to be an odd deal especially as its first products were rather mundane saloon ‘kit cars’ assembled at Longbridge in the West Midlands, the traditional home of the British motor industry.

Today, MG is the fastest growing car brand in the UK, fielding a six-car range of practical and affordable hatchbacks, SWs and SUVs.  It offers a range of quality mid-market cars, but nothing sporting.

All this is about to be changed with the unveiling of the MG Cyberster concept at Shanghai, a stunning convertible shape evoking classic MG roadsters of days gone by, a two-seater sports car recalling the brand’s tradition, drawing a number of styling cues from the classic MGB Roadster.

Carl Gotham, director of SAIC Design Advanced London, said: “The Cyberster is a bold statement that looks strongly into MG’s future, touching on our heritage but more importantly building on our cutting-edge technology and advanced design.

“Sports cars are the lifeblood of the MG DNA and Cyberster is a hugely exciting concept for us.”

The Cyberster’s intelligent all-electric architecture will enable an electric vehicle (EV) range of 500 miles and deliver 0-62mph in less than three seconds. Will it go into production and if so how much will it cost?  We await what we will be told at Shanghai.  Seemingly no British press will be in attendance.
