Vaccine Passports

The situation regarding the so-called Vaccine Passports remains very confusing.

The fact that Scotland, and for that matter Northern Ireland and Wales, have their own hygiene policies makes the rules difficult to understand.

Proposals by the European Commission will allow British tourists to apply for vaccination certificates for the summer holiday period.  These can be paper or digital and will be free for European citizens including those in the UK who would have been dealt with by the NHS.

Greece, keen to see British tourists back, has indicated that proof of a negative test will be sufficient.  Turkey has not placed any restrictions on arrivals from the UK at the present time.  Both Spain and Portugal are keen to welcome back holiday makers.  The sensitive position is curtailing any return to flight bookings in serious numbers.

France has seen localised further lockdowns near Paris, rather like the one the UK experienced, typically in Leicester.

Portugal will welcome British tourists from 17 May if they have a vaccination certificate or evidence of a recent negative Covid-19 test, said the country’s tourism minister, adding to hopes for a travel recovery in Europe this summer.

“We do hope to welcome all British holidaymakers from 17 May,” Portugal’s tourism minister Rita Marques informed. She said that Britons could either present their vaccination certificate or their negative test result in what would be a very straightforward and simple process.
